I have returned to Newcastle after a quick trip to Scotland. My first stop was in Edinburgh where I visited my old friend Jamie, explored the city’s crazy alleyways (called closes) and admired the spectacular views!

Gordon Graham’s Black Bottle from Burn Stewart is a relatively recent addition to the liquor stores of British Columbia. When I first noticed it my curiosity was piqued, but having no prior knowledge of it, and no knowledge of the brand in general, I viewed it with a blank slate of opinion. That is, until a Scotch loving young friend of mine recommended it as a good bargain buy.
Once upon a time Marten Brewing Company was supposed to open as Vernon’s first brewpub. This was back in the summer of 2014. When autumn rolled around, the opening date was pushed back to winter. And then spring of 2015. And then those of us who had been eagerly awaiting their existence began to slowly lose hope. But lucky for us the good folks at Marten’s have managed to buck the trend of postponements and they are now officially open!
A couple of winter’s ago in Victoria, I was at a friend’s going away/Birthday party. There were about a dozen of us, one keg of Driftwood’s Fat Tug IPA, one keg of Hoyne’s Dark Matter, and nine Led Zeppelin albums to listen to in a row. We all had a good time.
Later in the evening talk turned to Scotch. Our host then pulled out a bottle of BenRiach 10 year old that he had recently purchased and offered me a dram; he said that he found it too peaty. Whilst I was enjoying my glass, people all over the house began to notice a peculiar smell. As the smokey nose of the Scotch emanated forth from my glass, nostrils began to tingle, and people began to wonder if someone had lit a cigar inside the house.
I recently had a delightful, short notice visit from my wonderful friend Kelci, and we decided to spend the evening with some drinks and the turntable. We started out with some homemade rhubarb pie and mugs of Murchie’s Government Street green and black tea blend, accompanied by some of Harmonium’s Si on avait besoin d’une cinquieme saison. Then we moved on to the “hard” stuff.
