On the 13th of December 2016, my mates and I tested out the “Greatest Hits” pub crawl. Beginning at The Bent Mast around 2:30 in the afternoon, and wrapping up at about 11:00 in The Drake, it was a smashing success!
The whole time we were in Cuba, I thought this beer was from Guatemala. Turns out I was wrong.
This was our go to rum. At 4.45 CUC per half litre bottle, we went through a few of these during our short trip!
Back in July I announced the commencement of a “Pubs & Alcohol” themed Mail Art exhibit on my blog. Alas I have received very little in the way of submissions, and until now I have forgotten to post what I did receive.
Here is the first item I received, a beer label collage postcard sent by my sister when she was in Nicaragua in November.
For those of you who have never heard of Mail Art, it is essentially a global movement of anything creative that can be sent via post. Most often this means homemade postcards and drawings on envelopes, but it can also involve music, poetry, and found art. For those readers requiring further explanation, the Wikipedia page is a good read, and Ross Priddle’s blog Bentspoon is a prime example of an all encompassing, non thematic, ongoing Mail Art exhibit. Poke about his archives a little bit; the Mail Art he has received ranges from the bizarre to the beautiful. For examples of a themed exhibit, take a look at this one about Marie Antoinette, or this one about Welcome to Montana.
Last month I took the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver to spend a weekend with some family and friends. On Friday night I dined at the Flying Beaver in Richmond with my grandmother, and on Saturday I romped about the lower mainland with my great uncle. We had lunch at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club, perused his amazing jazz record collection, watched horse racing with a friend of his near the border at the Derby Bar (where I consumed three Budweiser’s- an appropriate atmosphere), and finished off the day with a mucho grande Italian feast at Nick’s Spaghetti House on Commercial. I was rather full. Then on Sunday afternoon, after some record shopping, I prepared to meet up with some friends for a few drinks.
