Days 9, 10, and 11: Yorkshire Coast and Newcastle

After one full day in York (bookended by two nights in York) we continued our journey north, now by following the Yorkshire coast!

Leaving York, we stopped at the Kirkham Priory, before skirting the North York Moors national park on our way into Scarborough. There we had a drink and some crisps in the Golden Ball (a Samuel Smith’s pub) before walking along the beach, buying some fudge, and generally trying to imagine the beginning of Treasure Island happening without the arcades. That’s what I do in every picturesque English seaside town: wonder if Treasure Island could have begun here.

Next up was Robin Hood’s Bay, which rocked my socks. Then we went to Whitby, which far surpassed my expectations and rocked my socks right off! We ate fish and chips, wandered about the town, drank some red wine in honour of Dracula, and genuinely enjoyed our visit. I’ll be back!

Day 10 was a full day on Tyneside! We went to the Newcastle castle, had a visit with our relatives in North Shields, a wander about Tynemouth, a night in the city, all capped off with a viewing of Get Carter!

Day 11 began by more pelging about in Newcastle, before heading north to our ancestral home! River Tweed, here we come!
