As we come to the end of a few days in which I was able to relax and come to terms with England and Belgium’s terrific World Cup runs thus far, it’s time to take a look back at some of the other drinks that I have consumed during this World Cup. Some of them excellent, some of them bad.
The bad: Budweiser
I used my hard earned money to buy copious amounts of this nasty beverage because it is the official beer of the World Cup!
Just kidding, I only drank this because I found a few unopened tins in the skip behind the local Sainsbury’s.
The okay: Pepsi Max
I used my hard earned money to buy this because I needed a healthy non alcoholic option, and I wanted to support the leader of my favourite team in the world!
Haha okay no. Whilst Messi is pretty cool, you’ll never catch me cheering for Argentina, or drinking Pepsi Max for health reasons. I also found these tins in the skip.
The better: Omnipollo Leon Belgian Pale Ale (brewed by De Proefbrouwerij in Belgium for Swedish based recipe makers Omnipollo)
Appearance: hazy yellow, lots of meringue like head, 6.5%
Nose: Belgian yeast, sweet grapefruit
Palate: bitter grapefruit, white pepper, pineapple
Finish: grapefruit and pine needles, a hint of alcoholic custard, then a lingering fruity bitterness
Rating: 4/5 Excellent
Though my preferred scenario involves England beating France in the World Cup Final, I am quite partial to Belgium for obvious reasons, and so I will watch tonight’s blockbuster match between Belgium and France with quite some relish! Spoon it on!
Don’t forget though: Football’s Coming Home!
