To those of you who don’t know, I am a bit of a Trekkie. For those of you who must know, The Next Generation is my favourite series, and my favourite film is probably a toss up between First Contact and the eponymous reboot film. Now that that’s out of the way, I can tell you about this beer (and this book) that I found!
I stumbled across this bottle of Vulcan Ale a couple of years ago around St. Patrick’s Day, and since it was Star Trek themed, as well as an Irish style red ale, I deemed it my sort of thing. Then I didn’t drink it for over two years, always putting it off for that “perfect” moment. Well damnit Jim, those don’t exist, so instead I wound up drinking it on my last full day in Canada whilst reading the Star Trek novel Spock, Messiah! Which is actually the reason why the moment wasn’t quite perfect.
Spock, Messiah! is a pretty rubbish excuse for a Star Trek adventure. A bunch of over sexualized Star Trek cliches and a good dose of Spocks-ploitation. Still, I literally found it on the ground next to a box of free stuff in Victoria, so it’s not like it cost me anything other than the time spent reading it that I can’t relive.
Anyways, the beer was actually pretty good, and I don’t think it had been harmed by an extra two years in the bottle.
Appearance: dark orange, minor head, 5.4%
Nose: very malty, sweet cakes, Red River cereal
Palate: sweet potato, malt, plums and figs
Finish: malty and sugared grapefruit
Overall: I initially thought 4/5 Excellent, but throughout the course of the beer, I decided that it was a touch too sweet.
Rating: 3/5 Good
