The whole time we were in Cuba, I thought this beer was from Guatemala. Turns out I was wrong.
After spending five nights in Havana, Ian and I travelled to Matanzas to spend our final two nights in Cuba. In Matanzas we discovered Linos Pizza, home of delicious pizza, cold beer, and fantastically inexpensive prices; we had lunch there three days in a row! It was at Linos, eating our final luncheon in Cuba, that we tried Presidente for the one and only time on our trip.
As for the rest of Matanzas, well, the city had less sights to offer than Havana, but there were some charming little beaches to be discovered if one looked in the right places.
Our first night there we had dinner out on the balcony of the San Severino restaurant in downtown Matanzas. It was there that I was finally able to try a local malt beverage, having been told by previous servers that it was “only for Cubans.” I’m not sure if they thought I wouldn’t like it, or if there is some sort of law against tourists drinking malt beverages, but I enjoyed it as much as the other malt drinks I have had in my life. It was certainly better than Bucanero Fuerte! We also enjoyed a cheeky Cohiba brand cigarette on the balcony.
Presidente (according to the internet, beer of the Dominican Republic, who knew!)
Nose: classic European nose, sea spray.
Palate: Angel food cake, malt.
Finish: hops, citrus hops.
Rating: 2/5 Okay, but better than Cristal.
