I just got back from an eight day, seven night trip to Cuba with my friend Ian. The purpose of the trip was to explore the vintage 1950s feel of the nation before any large American corporations get their grubby paws in the door, but we also had plenty of time to sample the cervezas nacional y bebidas nacional.
On our first night we happened to eat dinner at a restaurant in Havana that only served Heineken and Sol, but from there on we mostly drank Cristal and Bucanero, the local beers. Except that one time we drank Heineken in a bar that Ernest Hemingway used to go to.
Before we left Canada we paid our customary visit to a travel clinic, and were advised by the nurse to chose beer over water. While we also made sure to drink bottled water, it wasn’t hard to chose Cristal when the thirst was upon us; it’s just as easy to drink as water!
Appearance: looks like ginger ale, 4.9%
Palate: akin to mineral water
Finish: minor hint of hops
Overall: a good drink if you’re thirsty!
Rating: 2/5 Okay
