Lighthouse Keepers Stout

I finally followed through on my promise to review the Keepers Stout! God knows it took me long enough.

The Lighthouse Keepers Stout was first brought to my attention by my friend Jesse, who once asked me to review it. That was ages ago, well before my first failed attempt to do so. This fine beer is an Irish style stout, brewed to honour the brave men and women who have served (and in rare cases still serve) as lighthouse keepers along the stormy coasts of British Columbia.

I first sampled this beer back in February of 2015, wrote some tasting notes, and then promptly lost them. Then in March of 2015, I purchased a six-pack with the intention of doing some new tasting notes, but I left the beers at my friend Tony’s house and he rightfully chose not to waste them. Then I tried again in September, but I wasn’t entirely happy with my tasting notes.

Then in February of 2016 I landed myself a one month stint as Eco-guardian out at the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve & Lighthouse. Not only did this job inspire me to make tasting notes for the Lighthouse Race Rocks Ale (named after the lighthouse, though no official connection) but it also galvanized me to finally deal with my Keepers Stout unfinished business.

After my return to Victoria from Race Rocks, I took tasting notes one more time . Et voila, un peu de succès (albeit published two months late)! These notes were taken with my friends Ian and Stephen, as we guzzled Lighthouse Race Rocks’ and Keepers Stouts in honour of my return from the lighthouse.

Lighthouse Keepers Stout

Appearance: dark with a quickly dissipating head.

Nose: coffee, cloves, toffee, and dark chocolate.

Palate: toffee, fizzy soda water, dark chocolate, and black forest cake.

Finish: coffee, with faint hints of biscotti and pure vanilla extract.

Rating: 4/5 Excellent

So excited I spilled all over my trousers!

I have also taken the time to include some fresh photos of the happenings out at Race Rocks, as I am presently back here for another shift, this time spending one and a half months on the rock!

This is truly a wonderful place, and I find it especially awesome that there is a beer made to honour the lighthouse keepers of the past, present, and future!
