I tried a couple of bomber bottles during the pub crawl sequence of a Yule Dungeons & Dragons adventure, and I found myself particularly caught off guard by the Fernie Maple Porter. It didn’t even taste like a maple porter. I found myself wondering, “What in the heck is this beer all about? Did I make a bad roll on my character’s beer tasting abilities?”
The Sap Sucker Maple Porter tasted like a one dimensional Rodenbach. Now I love sour ales, but it’s better if they’re also complex. And this isn’t even supposed to be a sour ale, it’s called a MAPLE PORTER for Bowie’s sake!!! Perhaps I got a bad bottle, but I tried one the year before and it tasted the same. At any rate, here are my tasting notes for both beers.
Fernie Brewing: Sap Sucker Maple Porter
Appearance: very dark, crazy head
Nose: sweet ‘n sour sauce, spices
Palate: tangy and strong like a Rodenbach
Finish: extra tangy, fermented blackberries
Overall: this tastes nothing like a Maple Porter, and more like vinegary red wine.
Rating: 2/5 Okay
I also drank the Central City Gingerhead Gingerbread Stout. It made a lot more sense to my tastebuds.
It had nice roasty malts, a hint of hops, and a yummy gingerbread flavour throughout the beer.
