During the Christmas holidays, my Dad decided we would do a beer test. You see, he had recently tried a Big Rock Saaz Republic Pilz, and found it to be quite similar to Pilsner Urquell, a beer with which he has been long acquainted, and so he desired to do a side by side tasting with me.
Disclaimer! We accidentally half froze the beers on tasting night…
One evening we brought the cans in from the veranda, where they had been chilling, only to find them half frozen. It was then decided that we would pour for each other, so that a blind comparison could be made. In our haste we poured/squeezed the beers out before they had completely thawed, and we ended up with beer slushies in our glasses.
While we did wait long enough for the beer to thaw before trying to identify the two, I did not wait long enough to write down any tasting notes, as I was too thirsty to write.
The main observation that occurred though, was that both of us guessed wrong! We both know Pilsner Urquell very well, and yet we both thought that the familiar tasting glass contained the Urquell. What is so interesting about this, is that while my Dad had previously tried the Saaz, I never had.
So if you like Pilsner Urquell, go ahead and buy yourself a Big Rock Saaz Republic to see if YOU can taste the difference!
