One of my all time favourite Belgian beers, this beer is also one of the first Belgian’s that I ever tried. I remember sharing a bottle with my uncle and my father as we sat on the dock at my grandparents, watching Terrace Mountain burn to a crisp in the summer of 2009. Shortly after that I went off to Belgium for my exchange, armed with the knowledge that there was at least one beer I would enjoy in my new land; as it turned out, there were many!
Echt Kriekenbier is brewed by Brouwerij Verhaeghe in West Flanders. They are known for their Flemish Reds, including the wonderful Duchesse de Bourgogne, and the more “basic” Vichtenaar, which happens to be the base beer in this sour cherry variety.
Appearance: amber/sickly red.
Nose: red wine vinegar, cherries.
Palate: explosions of flavour, sour cherry, cranberry, lemon zest.
Finish: sour cherry, speculoos (flavour from the low countries that is reminiscent of digestive cookies), long lasting.
Rating: 5/5 Fucking Excellent
