Everyone has their go to drink for certain times or places, and for me and the rest of the billiards boys at Felicita’s Campus Pub, that drink is usually Hoyne’s Dark Matter. During the university school year there is a Trivia Pub Quiz and an 8-ball billiard tournament every Tuesday night at Felicita’s, which is always a lot of fun and brings in a lively crowd, including me.
Felicita’s is conveniently located just outside of Ring Road on the UVic campus, close to the central quad and the main bus exchange. With its patronage coming mostly from university students, the atmosphere is frequently upbeat, lively, fun and youthful. They have a fine selection of at least ten craft beer on tap at all times, including local brews from Driftwood, Lighthouse, Phillips, Vancouver Island Brewery and Hoyne, as well as ones from further afield such as Granville Island and Big Rock. The menu is relatively simple when compared with most pubs, being conscious of budget constrained students, but it also has some international flair to reflect the international experience of studying at a university these days. These include Chinese, Korean, Thai, Mexican, Greek, Indian and Italian dishes, along with the usual North American pub fare. There is nearly always a special event happening at Felicita’s, whether that be Local Music Mondays, Tuesday’s Tournaments, Wednesday’s Band of the Month, Thursday’s Karaoke, or Saturday’s Paint Night. What’s more, the pool table is always free, which facilitates more games, more friendships, and the opportunity to improve your game. In short, a pub worthy of a visit!
I don’t exclusively drink Dark Matter on Tuesday night’s though, because it also transcends boundaries into my other friend groups and I will drink it on any day of the week owing to the fact that it is a delicious beer. On my friend’s birthday back in January, Dark Matter was our choice of pitcher as we celebrated before heading off to holier pastures. You can find Dark Matter on tap all over Victoria, or in 22oz single bottles across the province.
Appearance: Dark liquid, or if you prefer, dark matter. 12oz sleeve.
Head: Nice white foam; tastes like cappuccino flavoured whip cream.
Nose: Roasted coffee, barley, and acorns. Also Kahlua.
Palate: Fizzy like soda water, with coffee flavour.
Finish: Initially sweet like brown sugar infused coffee, then long lasting bitter coffee dregs.
This beer is 3/5 Good, although for personal associations and sentimental reasons I nearly gave it a 4/5 Excellent.
Bonus activity to be done with Dark Matter: Shake a bit of black pepper onto your last mouthful or two; you will find that the flavours complement each other quite nicely!
